Creative adaptation of a traditional agricultural building for a stellar hospitality destination
Ballintaggart Farm has had many chapters in its history. The farmhouse and farm steading were built during the agricultural enlightenment period (18th and 19th centuries) when many of the vernacular agricultural buildings with stone walls and slate roofs were constructed, replacing earlier timber and thatch buildings.

With the advent of farming mechanisation, many of these buildings fell out of agricultural use. Farming at Ballintaggart ceased, and the buildings were sold, becoming a sporadically occupied second home, bustling with life only during short visits from the owners and their guests.
Our clients were looking for a place to celebrate the finest Scottish ingredients, where people could learn to cook and enjoy the best hospitality in Highland Perthshire when they found Ballintaggart. They breathed new life into the farm, filling the buildings with life once again, and serving wonderful, fresh and seasonal food.
Initially, the family lived in the farmhouse while running the Ballintaggart business from the old steading building. However, as the business flourished, hosting more events and guests, the line between work and home blurred. The need for additional guest accommodations and to improve functional areas for the staff became apparent.
Building Workshop worked closely with the Ballintaggart team to understand the needs of the guests as well as the staff and then creatively adapt the building grouping to enable a wonderful guest experience as well as setting the staff up for success.
We reimagined the layout of the farmhouse, creating two additional luxury bedrooms, carving out spaces for en suites and enlarging the kitchen and living areas. We also designed a beautiful and functional extension within the courtyard to meet the business and staff needs.
