This was one of Building Workshop’s very first projects, located in what we believe to be one of the most beautiful and inspirational places in on earth – the Alps…
The original building was a basic 1970s barn conversion with limited bedrooms and living accommodation. The brief was to develop a concept design to restore, modernise and extend the barn to provide a comfortable and contemporary home for a growing family. The design consists of three elements: the original bergerie, the contemporary intervention to the south and the conversion of the stone shed to the north.
There had to be a clear definition between traditional and contemporary, through clarity of design and the selection of materials and proportions. An open plan kitchen-dining-living room to the south gives excellent views of the village and surrounding areas while the bedrooms have privacy and tranquility. A ski storage area has been incorporated into the garage, which is underneath the living area, making use of the sloping site.
Sliding louvered screens can be either open (to let the light in) or pulled over the windows (to provide privacy and filter the strong summer sun).
