Peel Farm is in the Angus countryside. Building Workshop was asked to transform the old steading into 5 star holiday homes. This project was awarded Scottish Rural Development Funding from Europe and is part of Peel Farm’s diversification plans. Due to its size and location – beside a craft shop and new primary school – the Peel farm steading is no longer suitable for modern day farming practices, but is a fantastic place for holiday homes. Peel Farm was made a ‘Monitor Farm’ for rural diversification.
Our design completely respects the existing farm building. All of the existing openings have been used for windows and doors, and any new openings are of the same proportions. The former bothy – which is where the farm workers will have lived when it was built, in the mid 19th century – is now a simple two bedroom cottage with an open plan living space, a utility room and a bathroom. The former cattle sheds have become a light and airy four bedroom house with a large open plan kitchen-dining-living space, two bathrooms and a wc, a utility room and a sitting/study area as well as plenty of storage space.
The existing shed openings to the south, in both the house and the cottage, are simply glazed giving wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
