The historic agricultural buildings at Burmieston in Highland Perthshire were in a very sorry state of repair when Building Workshop first visited the farm. Decades of abandonment had left their mark with collapsed roofs, crumbling stone walls, and the remains of a horse mill, now beyond salvation. Yet amidst the ruins, a sense of resilience and history lingered. It was clear to us from the outset that Burmieston held a unique charm and deserved to be revitalised, preserving its legacy for generations to come.

Keesje and Olly’s vision was clear: to breathe new life into the buildings at Burmieston and to bring them back into meaningful use as a sustainable agritourism destination. The design for the sensitive conversion centred around a courtyard which connects all of the bedrooms, shared spaces and kitchen.
The priority for this project was to take a low-impact approach. Recycled and natural materials were used wherever possible, rainwater is collected and recycled and lighting is minimal out of respect for the surrounding flora and fauna.
The specification of each element for the interior was carefully considered by Keeje with thought, care and attention for the whole project. As an example, flooring for the spaces includes recycled basketball court flooring from the London Olympics, and Marmoleum which is a healthy, natural product.
