A new farmhouse concept overlooking Scotland’s first honeyberry orchard
Honeyberry House was built for the next generation of a farming family near Dundee, overlooking the River Tay. The design is inspired by local agricultural style architecture, using rural materials (wood and metal) to create a contemporary rural farmhouse and outbuilding. All spaces and rooms are arranged on the ground floor, with a flowing plan and clear visual and acoustic separation between living and sleeping areas.

Both domestic and agriculturally sized windows allow lots of natural daylight into the home creating a bright and airy interior with a strong inside-outside connection. The positioning of the new house was carefully considered to ensure that it complimented the surroundings. Following the line of a historic tree-lined drystone dyke has allowed the buildings to integrate with their setting. The separate outbuilding provides adaptable additional space and helps create a sense of place for the home as well as a south facing courtyard.
The home for the young family was designed to be practical as well as adaptable. There is double-height space above the main kitchen and living spaces and rooflights flood the interior with natural daylight in all weathers, while the area above the bedrooms was designed to be simply incorporated into the home, to create upstairs rooms if additional accommodation is needed in the future.
